Bank Unions Announce Nationwide Strikes

Three-Day Strike from September 28–30; Indefinite Strike Threat from October 26

Mohali:

Banking services across the country may be affected as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a series of nationwide strikes over its pending demands.

The unions have called for a nationwide strike on September 11, 2026, with key demands including the implementation of a five-day banking week and a review of the revised Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

The unions have also announced a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. They have further warned that if their demands remain unresolved, they will launch an indefinite strike from October 26.

The proposal for a five-day banking week, which the unions say was agreed upon under the 12th Bipartite Settlement, remains one of their major demands. Bank unions are also seeking changes to the revised PLI framework.

The proposed strikes could affect banking operations, including branch-based services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque-related work and other routine transactions.

Customers have been advised to complete essential branch transactions in advance and make use of ATMs, internet banking and mobile banking services wherever available.

The coming weeks are expected to be crucial, as discussions between bank unions, bank management and the government could determine whether the proposed strikes are called off or proceed as announced.
