Mohali’s Historic Foundation Stone Missing, Questions Raised Over Heritage Preservation

Mohali:

Mohali, one of Punjab’s prominent modern cities, is facing questions over the preservation of its historical heritage after the foundation stone marking the establishment of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (SAS Nagar) was reportedly found missing from its original location.

The foundation stone was laid by the then Punjab Chief Minister Giani Zail Singh on November 1, 1975, near Kamla Market in Phase I. Its reported disappearance has raised concerns about the protection of an important symbol of the city’s history.

BJP District Mohali President Sanjeev Vashisht has highlighted the issue, expressing concern over the neglect of the historic landmark and stressing the need to preserve Mohali’s heritage.

Over the past five decades, Mohali has developed from a planned township into a major industrial, educational, IT and commercial hub. However, the reported disappearance of the foundation stone has raised questions about the efforts made by successive public representatives and authorities to preserve the city’s historical identity.

Vashisht has called for the Punjab Government, GMADA, Municipal Corporation and District Administration to investigate the matter, trace the original location of the foundation stone and take appropriate steps to protect the site.

He has also stressed the need to install a permanent commemorative plaque featuring photographs and details of the foundation ceremony, ensuring that the historical significance of the location is preserved for future generations.

Another key demand is the official celebration of November 1 as Mohali Foundation Day every year. Such an initiative, he believes, would honour the vision behind the establishment of the city and help younger generations understand its history and development.

While Mohali has made remarkable progress in various sectors, the reported disappearance of its historic foundation stone has brought heritage preservation into focus. The administration is now expected to examine the matter and take appropriate action to restore the honour of the place where the city’s journey began.
