Roads Dug Up, Open Manholes Turn Phase 2–4 Road into Accident Hazard: Atul Sharma

Mohali :

Serious concerns have been raised by Phase 2 Resident Atul Sharma, over the dangerous condition of the dividing road between Phase 2 and Phase 4, Mohali, where road excavation carried out to locate underground manholes has been left incomplete, with broken asphalt, rubble and debris scattered across the carriageway.

The neglected stretch has become a major safety hazard for commuters, Sharma said.
Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are forced to navigate around the debris, while the absence of barricades, warning signs or reflective markers significantly increases the risk of accidents, particularly during the night and rainy weather.

Residents have questioned the functioning of the concerned civic authorities, stating that while maintenance and repair work is necessary, abandoning excavation sites on busy roads without restoring them reflects poor planning and a lack of accountability.

It is pertinent to mention that this is not a new issue. In 2013, Atul Sharma, a resident of Phase 2, Mohali, had approached the Permanent Lok Adalat by filing a case against GMADA and the Public Health and Water Supply Department, seeking directions for the proper maintenance of the city’s inner roads and sewerage system. More than a decade later, it seems that the ground reality remains largely unchanged, with civic works often left incomplete and public safety compromised.

“Despite repeated complaints and even legal intervention years ago, the same problems continue to persist. The condition of the roads clearly raises the question—who cares for the safety of Mohali residents?” said Atul Sharma.

Atul Sharma have urged the Municipal Corporation Mohali, GMADA and the concerned engineering departments to immediately remove the debris, restore the damaged road and ensure that all future excavation works are properly barricaded and completed within a fixed timeframe to prevent accidents and inconvenience to the public.
