Bedi Urges Government to Address Civic Crisis in Newly Merged Mohali Villages

Mohali :

Former Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has urged the Punjab Government to immediately transfer administrative control of the villages recently merged into the Mohali Municipal Corporation and release adequate funds for development works, saying thousands of residents are being deprived of basic civic amenities.
In a letter addressed to the Municipal Commissioner, with copies sent to the Secretary of the Punjab Local Government Department and the Chief Administrator of GMADA, Bedi highlighted that although the village panchayats were dissolved after the merger, the administrative takeover has not been completed.
He said residents of Balongi, Balomajra, Balliali, Chappar Chiri Khurd, Chappar Chiri Kalan, Lakhnour, Sukhgarh, Sambhalki, Nanu Majra, Rudrakan, Chilla, as well as IT City (Sector 82), TDI and Aerocity, are facing serious difficulties due to the absence of sanitation, sewerage maintenance, garbage collection and other essential municipal services.
Bedi pointed out that the ongoing monsoon has further worsened the situation, while residents remain uncertain about which authority is responsible for resolving their grievances. He added that the Municipal Corporation lacks both sufficient funds and administrative powers to address public issues effectively.

He alleged that despite government assurances of financial support and a clear division of responsibilities between GMADA and the Municipal Corporation, no concrete action has been taken, leaving residents caught in administrative uncertainty.
Bedi demanded the immediate formal takeover of all newly merged areas by the Municipal Corporation, the release of adequate development funds, and the restoration of sanitation, sewerage, roads, streetlights and other essential civic services.
He also called for a clear demarcation of responsibilities between GMADA and the Municipal Corporation so that elected representatives can effectively undertake development works.
Stating that Mohali is among Punjab’s fastest-growing cities and that the airport-adjoining areas are crucial to its future expansion, Bedi said denying residents basic civic infrastructure is unacceptable and urged the government to intervene without delay.
