NGAI Begins Nationwide Drive to Upgrade Gatka Officiating Standards

Chandigarh
The National Gatka Association of India (NGAI), the apex governing body for Gatka in the country and affiliated with the World Gatka Federation (WGF), has announced the launch of its 3rd National Gatka Refresher Course, aimed at strengthening the technical and officiating framework of the sport. The intensive three-day programme will be held from December 12 to 14 in Sector 53, Chandigarh.

NGAI President Advocate Harjeet Singh Grewal, State Awardee, said the initiative is a key step towards elevating officiating standards nationwide. “This refresher course is a cornerstone of our mission to professionalize officiating in the Gatka game. We are committed to creating a national standard of excellence that our officials can carry onto the global stage,” he stated.

Course incharge and Vice Chairman of the International Sikh Martial Art Academy Sukhchain Singh Kalsani, along with NGAI General Secretary Harjinder Kumar, informed that the 20-hour programme will include intensive theory and practical sessions designed to enhance technical knowledge and on-ground decision-making. A written examination will also be conducted for grading and certification. Candidates achieving high scores will receive smart identity cards at the closing ceremony.

Highlighting the objectives, Grewal said the certification would serve as a license for officiating in upcoming national and international Gatka championships, and would significantly benefit those pursuing coaching and sports training careers. “This course is an investment in the future of Gatka. We are building a disciplined, highly qualified, and technically sound officiating corps to lead the sport as it rises on national and international platforms,” he added.

Camp organiser and Joint Secretary of Gatka Association of Punjab Baljit Singh Saini said NGAI remains committed to preserving, promoting, standardising, and expanding the traditional Sikh martial art as a competitive sport. The association organizes national tournaments, training programmes, and deploys certified officials to ensure the sport’s systematic growth across India.
