Mohali :
A growing population in Mohali’s newly developed sectors is facing a notable shortage of religious infrastructure, with no space allocated for gurdwaras, temples, or other worship sites. Raising the concern, Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has written to the Punjab Chief Secretary—who is also the Chairman of GMADA—seeking urgent allotment of land for religious institutions.
Bedi stated that despite thousands of residents now living in Aero City, IT City, and Sectors 85 to 89, GMADA has not marked even a single plot for religious use. He said that while residents have repeatedly petitioned GMADA for years, not a single proposal has progressed, nor has any land been identified.
He added that many residents have approached him personally about the issue, and although he discussed it with officials, no steps have been taken. Due to the absence of local religious spaces, people are forced to travel to old Mohali phases for essential ceremonies like weddings, funerals, and bhog services.
Highlighting the contrast, Bedi pointed out that every phase and sector in old Mohali has proper gurdwaras, temples, and other religious establishments, but the new sectors have been completely neglected in planning.
In his letter, he urged the Chief Secretary to consider the rising population’s needs and allocate land immediately so that residents can practice their faith and conduct family events conveniently within their neighbourhoods.
Bedi also emphasised the need for proper traffic planning and dedicated parking areas while marking land for such institutions, given the increasing traffic load in the new sectors.
He appealed for swift action to provide the much-needed religious infrastructure to the rapidly growing residential areas of Mohali.
