₹7-Crore Drainage Project Approved, Relief for Waterlogged Sectors

Mohali :

Residents of Sectors 70, 71, Matour, Phase 7 and Phase 3B2 in Mohali have got long-awaited relief from chronic rainwater and tubewell waterlogging after the Local Government Department approved a ₹7-crore drainage project aimed at providing a permanent solution.
The project involves laying a large-diameter underground pipeline from Matour Chowk to N-Chowk to ensure smooth discharge of rainwater as well as tubewell outflow. The proposal, pending for a long time, has now received formal clearance.
Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi said the issue had troubled residents for several years. He explained that during the monsoon, natural water flow enters the area from the rear, but raised road levels ahead block drainage outlets, resulting in severe waterlogging.
Water pumped out through tubewells in low-lying areas could not move forward and instead entered homes, causing heavy losses to residents,” Bedi said.
He added that despite repeated representations and growing public pressure, the problem remained unresolved for years. “I fought a long battle for this project and even announced a dharna to ensure the issue was addressed,” he said.
According to Bedi, the newly approved pipeline will carry both natural rainwater flow and tubewell discharge, ensuring a lasting solution. He said the project will benefit Sectors 70 and 71 as well as Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and Matour.
Residents will finally be able to live without the fear of waterlogging during the monsoon,” he said.
The Deputy Mayor also thanked officials of the Municipal Corporation and other concerned departments for their cooperation and expressed special gratitude to Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal for extending full support to the project.
