Chandigarh :
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Punjabi Virsa Cultural Society (Registered) honoured two local women for their exemplary efforts in turning household wet waste into compost. Jaspaal Kaur of House No. 2317, Sector 71, and Saminder Kaur of House No. 3583, Sector 69, were recognised for their environmentally conscious work and community inspiration.
Society president Satvir Singh Dhanoa highlighted the importance of composting at home, noting that dumping wet waste outside contributes to health hazards and pollution. He urged residents to make productive use of household waste by preparing compost, either individually or collectively in neighbourhoods.
The awardees shared that for the past eight years, they have not disposed of household waste outside their homes. Instead, they have been producing organic compost, which has kept their plants thriving and green, while also growing organic vegetables at home. Avoiding chemically sprayed vegetables has also reduced their medical bills, they added.
Dhanoa praised the women, stating that women are the backbone of the household and can drive significant change in society through simple, environmentally friendly actions. The ceremony was attended by community members including Karam Singh Mavi, Ashok Kumar Arora, Harbhagat Singh Bedi, Major Singh, Parvinder Singh, Harmit Singh, Surinder Jeet Singh, Niranjan Singh, Laabh Singh Brar, Hardeep Singh, and Malkeet Singh.
This recognition aims to encourage more households to adopt home composting and contribute to cleaner surroundings and sustainable gardening practices.
