Chandigarh : Mayor Saurabh Joshi launched a city-wide cleanliness and waste management awareness campaign at the Community Centre in Sector 15, aiming to promote sustainable living practices among citizens. The event was attended by MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, MC Joint Commissioner Himanshu Gupta, Councillor Gurbax Rawat, along with office-bearers of Market Welfare Associations and Resident Welfare Associations.
The campaign’s primary objective is to educate residents on cleanliness, scientific waste management, and zero-waste practices. Under the initiative, MC teams will conduct door-to-door awareness drives, interact with households, and distribute pamphlets detailing proper waste segregation at source.
Mayor Joshi and the Commissioner personally visited several households in Sector 15, urging citizens to follow waste segregation guidelines, motivate neighbors, and adopt zero-waste habits at home. Residents were educated on separating waste into four dustbins and using kitchen and vegetable waste for home composting, which reduces pressure on dumping sites while benefiting households. Special focus was placed on zero-waste markets and commercial areas, encouraging shopkeepers and vendors to manage waste responsibly and maintain cleanliness in market spaces.
The Mayor emphasized that cleanliness starts at home and that active citizen participation is key to success in initiatives like Swachh Survekshan.
He urged residents to adopt in-house composting, minimize food waste, and reduce overall waste generation.
Highlighting the importance of reuse and recycling, Joshi also promoted the MC’s ‘Swachh Sawari’ initiative, encouraging citizens to donate old items such as shoes, crockery, clothes, books, and other household goods. Donated items are refurbished and distributed to the needy through One Rupee Stores, combining social welfare with environmental responsibility. MC Commissioner Amit Kumar reiterated that citizens play a pivotal role in supporting municipal efforts and strictly following Municipal Solid Waste Management rules.
The campaign aims to build awareness, foster sustainable habits, and strengthen Chandigarh’s identity as a clean and green city, ensuring that cleanliness becomes a part of everyday life for all residents.
