Municipal Corporation Councillors Raise Alarm Over Halted Sweeping Garbage

Mohali : The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) House witnessed a heated session today as councillors raised concerns over the halt of mechanical sweeping on B roads and the growing piles of garbage across residential and public areas. The issue arose after work was taken away from the existing contractor and reassigned to another, leaving several areas uncleared. Councillors expressed frustration over the administration’s handling of long-pending waste disposal issues.

Phase-11 councillor Kulwant Singh Kaler criticized the MC Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, saying their role had been reduced to issuing statements in the media without any on-ground action. “It has been over two years, yet no solution has been found for proper waste management,” he remarked. Ward No. councillor Manjit Singh Sethi added that the civic body was struggling to maintain cleanliness across the city and urged the MC to hire adequate manpower and machinery before taking on new projects, explaining why agenda items related to city cleaning remained pending. The session also highlighted the increasing problem of stray dogs in the city. Mayor Sidhu noted that the menace was growing daily, prompting numerous complaints from residents and councillors alike. He revealed that a letter had been sent to the MC Commissioner requesting immediate action.

The Mayor suggested collaborating with the Punjab Home Guards Canine Training and Breeding Institute in Sundran village, Mohali district, which has approximately 16 acres of land. He proposed exploring the possibility of temporarily housing stray dogs at the facility to reduce dog bite incidents and ease public fear. The discussion underlined mounting public frustration with civic services, stressing the urgent need for effective waste management and animal control measures. Councillors urged the MC to take immediate steps to restore cleanliness and ensure public safety in the city. The session concluded with a call for coordinated efforts between the MC administration, contractors, and government institutions to address these pressing urban challenges, reinforcing that citizen welfare and public health must remain a top priority.
